Friday Favorites | RuPaul Songs

I’ve made no secret of my obsession with Drag Race. My young love of the show has grown exponentially over the last three months while I’ve been home.

I’ve finally had to chance to watch all seasons of the show, including many (but not all) episodes of Untucked. This has caused my love for Mama Ru and drag in general to skyrocket.

I wanted to take a moment to talk about my favorites in RuPaul’s repertoire. So many of these songs are genuinely good, with emotional lyrics and amazing tunes. Some of them are simply perfect for pumping iron at the gym.

  • Supermodel (You Better Work)

I remember this classic from my youth. The obsession was starting long before I even suspected it. Shantay shantay shantay.

  • Born Naked (feat. Clairy Browne)

I love Ru’s quote so much, “You’re born naked, and the rest is drag.” This is the song incarnation of that quote. It peps me up and gets me excited about the prospect of the end of gender as a social concept.

  • Glamazon

This one is a perfect gym song, catchy and upbeat.

  • Call Me Mother

I think this is my favorite right now. And it includes the classes line of, “She done already done had herses.”

  • Peanut Butter (feat. Big Freedia)

Does this song need an explanation? Great energy, great beat, great gym song.

  • Hey Doll

Some of Ru’s best lyrics are in this gem. It might not be perfect for high-energy workouts, but it’s a genuinely good song.

  • American (feat. The Cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race)

I love these cast remixes so much, and they bring back such good memories. Aquaria went from like a 6 to a 10 in my head after this song was released.

  • Sissy that Walk

Okay, it’s hard to not develop a dance routine to songs like this. I’m sure I’ve gotten plenty of judgmental looks from onlookers at the gym from how hard I jam to this song.
