I’ve been doing a lot of driving these past couple of months which has led me to discover some great radio stations around California. These stations provided the soundtracks to my trips to Sequoia, Yosemite, and Los Angeles.
- “Don’t Take the Money” Bleachers
I’m a big fan of their first album, but hadn’t given their new one a listen yet. My mother directed me to this song and I can’t stop listening.
- “Sweet Disaster” DREAMERS
I swear I heard this song on the radio during a long drive last year and I couldn’t look it up and forgot the lyrics until it came up on my Spotify Daily Mix. It has such a fun sound and pumps me up.
- “Both (feat. Drake)” Gucci Mane
This played on so many remixes on Power 106 in LA, and I didn’t know that I liked Drake so much until now.
- “Feel It Still” Portugal. The Man
I don’t know where I first heard it, but then it was in those Aaron Paul Vitamin Water commercials and I had to add it to every playlist because it’s so good and catchy. I only know one other Portugal. The Man song, but I know I need to give more of them a listen.
- “J-Boy” Phoenix
My mother heard this and wouldn’t stop talking about it until I listened. It’s so good and I just realized why it’s called J-Boy a couple days ago. I loved Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, so I’m not surprised their sound is still this good.
- “Rolex” Ayo & Teo
This was the anthem of my time in Yosemite.
- “Changing of the Seasons” Two Door Cinema Club
This is another recommendation from my mother (we have similar tastes in music and are constantly sending songs to each other). It’s so empowering, and I want to scream the lyrics from the rooftops.
- “Terrified” Childish Gambino
I’ve been a huge fan of Donald Glover for years, but I hadn’t really listened to his new album until recently because I wasn’t expecting a new sound. Turns out, I love it, though I do appreciate the quick rhymes of Camp and Because the Internet.
- “Passionfruit” Drake
Ugh, I cannot get enough of this song. Even without lyrics, I would listen to it on repeat.
- “iSpy (feat. Lil Yachty)” KYLE
Another gem from Yosemite. Not only is the song happy and catchy, but Lil Yachty sounds like he’s smiling and that makes me really happy for some reason.
- “That’s What I Like” Bruno Mars
I first heard this in Fresno and knew it would be a song of this summer for me.
- “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” Shawn Mendes
I hadn’t actually listened to this before adding it to my playlist, but I know that (the flawless) Shawn Mendes would provide a happy song.
- “Redbone” Childish Gambino
Before looking it up, I hadn’t realized this was Childish. I remember it from Get Out (so good, I could talk about it forever), and I love the new sound.
- “Something Just Like This” The Chainsmokers and Coldplay
I was obsessed with “Closer” and from yet another recommendation from my mother, this became a summer staple.
Additions to the original playlist:
- “The Man” The Killers
- “I’m the One” DJ Khaled
- “Green Light” Lorde
- “Take It All Back 2.0” Judah & the Lion
- “Glory” Bastille
- “Doing It for the Money” Foster the People
- “Tokyo – Vampires & Wolves” The Wombats
- “A Long December” Counting Crows
- “Keep It Low” Generationals
- “Your English is Good” Tokyo Police Club
- “Holiday from Real” Jack’s Mannequin
Music has always been a huge part of my household, and I take that love and appreciation with me everywhere I go. There is music playing constantly in my childhood home, at all hours of the day. Music is so personal; everyone can take something different from the same piece. I almost always make playlists to frame the trips I take, so certain songs tend to remind me of the time spend there. I still associate “Wow” by Beck with running along the ocean in Reykjavik and “Heathens” by twentyone pilots with fast-walking through Hyde Park in London. So much can be communicated through music, and that’s a beautiful thing.
